23 February 2018On February 23, 1918, in order to confront the German troops according to the Decree of V.I. Lenin in our country began to create the first detachments of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army (RKKA). A year later, Nikolai Podvoisky, Chairman of the Supreme Military Inspection of the Red Army, received a proposal to mark the anniversary of the creation of the Red Army. The celebration was scheduled for February 23. However, due to the circumstances, this holiday was forgotten until 1922. There is another version of the origin of the holiday.According to this version, on February 23, 1918, the Red Guard defeated the German army near Pskov and Narva. In honor of this victory, a holiday was established. However, historians consider this version a myth, since according to a historical source on February 23, 1918, the Germans were at a great distance from Pskov and Narva, and therefore no fights could be fought on that day in this territory. The first solemn celebration of the Day of the Red Army and Navy took place on February 23, 1923 in honor of the Red Army's five-year anniversary. Since that time the holiday has become very popular. In 1949, the holiday was renamed the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union - on the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland. Gradually, in connection with the prevalent ideas in the society that the representatives of the male half of society should act as the defenders of the Motherland, the holiday was given an informal name "Men's Day" in opposition to the International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8. Since 2002, the Defender of the Fatherland Day has become a non-working holiday. Some people today also take the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland as a holiday dedicated solely to people who are directly related to the army and security forces. However, most of the Russian population prefer February 23 to congratulate all men without exception, regardless of their age and attitude to the army. On the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland, a strong half of humanity accepts congratulations from close and dear people. Women congratulate their husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, friends and acquaintances, give them gifts and surround them with attention and care. Defender of the Motherland Day is traditionally celebrated not only in Russia, but also in Ukraine, Belarus, Transnistria and South Ossetia.
